We recently caught up with Newcastle based Indie Electro artist Foemen to chat about his new single and much more!
Welcome Foemen! Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Greetings, I am from Newcastle Australia & write/record/perform music under my name ‘Foemen’. I love creating epic textures in video & music.
Congratulations on your new single Vida By Her! How has the single been received so far?
Very Well Thank you! I was very excited to release this single. I wanted ‘Vida By Her’ to have a vibe that someone who could say “That sounds like Foemen” . This actually happened only a couple of times but that was enough to make me feel accomplished.
What inspired the new single?
Films especially, although I wanted to capture a songy type structure at the same time. I listen to alot of different music so it would be hard to pinpoint exactly a direct influence but I do recall listening to Gessaffelstein, The Weeknd (New Album). I’m still learning how to sing so listening to ‘The Weeknd’ sets the bar really high in terms of singing haha.
The video is truly amazing. How did you come up with the concept?
I have released 3 singles with videos this year & have always wanted to create a follow on sense or linking story between all 3. I like epic & intense emotional shots, so I would keep an eye out for places in Newcastle i could create this vibe. Turns out there were loads of spots, just had to be a little creative with how to use them. Movies such as ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Mad Max’ were big influences. I really enjoyed the process & hope to make a lot more in the future.
How have you been dealing with the COVID situation?
Trying to make the best of it, Looking after myself & place. Writing music, experimenting with new Synthesizer. Usually staying close to home when possible. I May look at a COVID appropriate gig very soon.
How does your songwriting process work?
Mostly just toying around until something feels right. I Love working with my producer & good friend ‘Dave Hammer’.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
Always A Tough question. I do come back to Depeche Mode a lot. Lately I’ve been listening to Editors & Interpol which has been a bit of nostalgia. My favourite track of the year is by ‘Droves’ , Cannibals! I recommend it!
How did you come up with the name Foemen?
My partner had thought of it during a trip to Europe, basically represented all the war memorabilia plus I just really like the name. like a superhero name haha.
What is the highlight of your musical career?
Hmmmm, generally being able to perform in front of a crowd. I was a very nervous person at one stage. A person very special to me who has now passed away, was able to watch me perform at a sold out ‘Cambridge Hotel’ Newcastle supporting ‘The Preatures’.
What is next for Foemen?
I have a couple of singles that I am looking at releasing in the future + looking at more videos to go with them!
