We recently sat down the Sydney based Alt Rock newcomers The Opinion Industry to chat about their debut single Opinions, their hobbies and much more.
When did you start writing music?
For The Opinion Industry? About 3 years ago but the new EP that’s coming out was only about a year ago and those songs fell into place very quickly – like 3 weeks. There was a US election going on and the world was in the midst of the first wave of the global pandemic so there was no shortage of inspiration to draw from.
What motivates your song writing?
A love of melody and groove/feel first and foremost – and specifically for this project we are all focussed on writing about ‘topics’, exploring them lyrically and creating an openness to how we approach each discussion. We tackle topics like social internet communication, big tech overreach, modern protesting and Karens on our latest offering and each band member comes from a different perspective which makes our messages both rich and strong in their delivery.
What is the inspiration behind your new single?
The music came first for that one and its was an obscure but exciting major/minor key push/pull that I loved. I didn’t really know what to do with it but was playing it on guitar constantly. Previously I had written a little four line protest shouty thing on the piano whilst in the studio which we released called No Comment (CHANT) and so I wanted a vehicle for our first single to incorporate those lyrics and ‘announce’ the band – it comes in at the end of Opinions. The song is a mission statement of sorts and is looking into the validity of the individual’s right to ‘argument’ and their purpose behind it.
Tell us 5 words that best describe you as a band?
Confronting, Loud, Insightful, Silly, Opinionated.
What is the first album you ever bought?
On cassette: Roxette – Look Sharp!
On Vinyl: Michael Jackson – BAD.
On CD: Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magic.
Digital: Probably Deftones/Sevendust.
What is your favourite hobby outside of music?
Getting beaten up by my kids – wrestling with them, consuming Netflix.
Whereas been the highlight of your career so far?
I’d have to say getting a message from Satchel of Steel Panther telling us that we are his new favourite band, his message was incredible and validated everything I had done up until that point. We are all such huge fans of his and his songwriting!
What is your strangest experience as a musician?
Receiving said message from Satchel. So random and mind-blowing.
What is some advice you would give to young musicians starting out?
Listen to a lot of ABBA & The Bee Gees. Record with real instruments/amps in the studio – avoid plugins. Describe song parts in how you want them to feel – not how they sound (eg. I want it to sound pissed off!). Play and write with other people – don’t write it all yourself.
What is the plan for the rest of 2021?
The Opinion Industry will be releasing four more singles and jumping into the studio to record another EP. And more wrestling with the kids!
