Flea the iconic bass player and one of the founders of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers finally gets around to telling his fascinating origin complete with the high and lows that one might expect frontman LA street rat turned mega rock star.
This strange story of a boy called Flea starts in Rye New Work, It was a normal life. For a very short time. His parents divorced, then remarried. His new father was a jazz musician, so when friends came over Flea was naturally included sparking his interest in music, now a life long passion.
The family moved to LA but it soon fell apart, “I was raised in a very violent, alcoholic family,” he recalls. “I grew up terrified pf my parents, particularly my father, began smoking weed at 13 and became a frequent user of harder drugs. He wass on the streets at 14 and soon after me another social disfunctionary and drug user Anthony Kiedis, they formed the band that would become the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
