Rising to fame on Australian Idol, Lisa Mitchell has shown the world that she’s no stranger to the limelight. Coming off her third studio album, Warriors, Lisa proves yet again why we love listening to her introspective lyrics and catchy beats. Lisa was kind enough to answer a few questions for us at Buzz Magazine from music to sustainable clothing and everything in between.
Quite a few years have passed since the release of your last album, but well worth the four year wait. What made it the ideal time to come back?
I’d been living in Sydney, working away – writing, drawing, dancing, travelling a bit in Europe. I made a big shift on the business side of things and started working with a new manager, and finally I realised I was ready to make another album. I ended up recording, Warriors, in Sydney with Eric J Dubowsky. Ravenous to make another already..!
Now that Warriors is available worldwide how has it been received?
So stoked to have this album available worldwide, which was my goal from the beginning of this process. I love travelling to new places, and though I adore Paris, London and Australia, I can’t wait to travel more in the states, maybe more on the next album. I am loving spending time in London and Europe at the moment for shows for Warriors.
Do you have a particular aspect of the album that you favour?
I love that with this album we stuck to more of a uniform than the last two albums. It definitely has a ‘sound,’ which is rare for me as I tend to experiment a lot…
It’s always interesting hearing what music artists are listening to. Who peaks your interest these days?
At the moment I adore listening to Sylvan Esso, (their new album is AHH!) Madeleine Peyroux, Eugene McGuinnes, C MacLeod Carla Bruni, Vallis Alps…
What are you most looking forward to on tour with Dustin Tebbutt?
I am looking forward to sharing a band for this tour! It makes sense and I think it’ll lend itself to more collaborative moments. The whole thing will have a cohesive quality, a world of its own…
Knowing what you do today, would you go back and change anything about your music career thus far?
Good question, I bet there are things I wish I knew earlier, but really, I think you have to go through everything to learn it anyway… I think I’d just tell myself to have weekly check-ins with my book-keeper and to generally just relax. Hehe.
Would you mind going on a little bit about your love of sustainable clothing and working with natural fabrics?
Working on an Organic Farm a few years ago, I really started thinking a lot more about farming methods and their impact on our waterways and our bodies. The amount of chemicals and pesticides that are used in non-organic farming is just not good, so my my first preference for buying clothes is always second hand – op shops or hand-me-downs from friends and family. And then organic natural fibres, or recycled synthetic fibres. Although I hate the feeling of them on my skin. There is a lot of inspiring work being done in the waste-industry for clothes which is heartening.
Getting a bit ahead of myself here, but anything else in the works this year?
After my UK & European touring ends I have the co-headline tour with Dustin Tebbutt in Australia in June! After that I’ll be setting up shop somewhere for a bit and working on my new album.
