We recently caught up with Melbourne Alternative Pop songwriter
Oliver Downes to discuss his latest album release The Wheel and much more.
1. Who are you and why are you here?
I’m Oliver Downes and I’m here because I’ve just released my second album, ‘The Wheel’
2. How long have you been writing music?
I wrote my first little bits and pieces when I was a kid – I must’ve been 9 or 10. My first piano teacher encouraged me to write and I went through a phase of having something new to show him every couple of weeks. I didn’t really start trying to write songs until I was in my 20s though, playing in a band with a few mates and just sparking off each other’s ideas. Since then I’ve just kept at it.
3. Congrats on the release of your new album ‘The Wheel’! How have fans reacted to the record so far?
Thanks! I’ve had some very rosy feedback from quite a few people which has been nice. One person who supported my Pozible campaign last year sent me a message telling me that she’d listened to it seven times in a day which made me pretty happy.
4. What is your personal favourite song from ‘The Wheel’?
That’s a hard choice. I think the album has the best songs I’ve written on it. Probably ‘A Minor Place’ though – it’s a mid-album ballad which I feels as though came together perfectly. I reckon ‘Cellophane’ is a ripper too.
5. What would be your dream line-up to play with?
I’m pretty happy with my current band! You throw a stone in Melbourne and odds are you’ll hit an amazing young musician – I’m hugely blessed to have the support of a wonderful group of them
6. What motivates you to write music?
Inner compulsion. I just get ideas for music and then have to find a way to manifest them or I go a bit batty.
7. Any tips for upcoming Australian musicians?
Don’t try to sound like anyone other than yourself.
8. What do you have planned for the rest of 2019?
Well, my girlfriend just gave birth to our daughter, so that’ll probably keep me pretty busy! We launched ‘The Wheel’ in April with gigs in Melbourne, Sydney and a couple of other spots – I’m keen to do some more gigs a little later in the year and hopefully the odd festival spot too. Til then I’m going back into writing mode in between changing nappies. I reckon album number 3 is probably going to be a collection of love songs.
Mount Gambier based Alternative Rock band Admella recently released their new single Plastic Heart, along with a music video.
Admella debuted in 2011 and went on to win the Triple J Unearthed Soundwave competition in 2012. They supported the likes of Northlane, Ocean Grove and Dead Letter Circus.
After a 3-year hiatus, Admella have returned with a new vision and clear concept of how they want to deliver their art to the world.

Melbourne based Electro Pop singer/songwriter Misha Bear is releasing her new video tomorrow and we are lucky enough to bring you the exclusive premiere of Stories.
The slick music video was directed, filmed and produced by Brad Houston from Engageneer.
The video starts with Bear singing to the camera, followed by her shaking up a snow ball to reveal the narrative. Stories is reflective, catchy as hell and will have you moving those dancing shoes quick-smart!
Stories is taken from Bear’s recently released EP, which was exclusively premiered via The AU Review. The EP is a beautifully crafted collection of Electronic Pop. Multiple tracks from the EP have received radio airplay across Australia.

Melbourne based Pop sorceress Elenore is making a powerful statement in her new single Maybe I Am, which was premiered via The AU Review.
“I constantly get very frustrated at repetitively being told that I look mean or need to smile – this song is an ode to myself that I don’t need to change for anyone. It’s a little bit of a f*** off. Over the past couple of years women have really begun to rise up in telling their stories and standing up for themselves. This song is my small involvement in the huge movement and I hope that it speaks to other women as it does to me.”
Elenore released her debut single Landslide in 2019 and has since released several singles that were produced by Evan Klar (Essie Holt, SYDE.)
Elenore’s new single is for fans of Charlie XCX and Vera Blue. The single is available on all major online stores.
Newcastle Indie Electro artist Foemen recently released his new single and video Bones.
The single was recorded with award winning producer Dave Hammer, who has worked with the likes of Lime Cordiale, Ro, Thundamentals and Tuka.
Foemen creates a catchy brand of Synthwave music that draws inspiration from pivotal soundtracks from the 80’s such as Terminator and Blade Runner.
“Bones is ironically about an apocalyptic world not to far from reality. Nods towards the terminator & Blade Runner & Tron. The lyrics can be left up to interpretation, although the song creates a cold, dark landscape & along with video shows clips of a human perhaps being created or manufactured (purpose built) for the current world in which it is set. “How did you know, im buried in bones” hints a humorous attempt that each person created is becoming more & more alike.” – Foemen

Sydney Producer, Engineer and Songwriter Jay-Gee has some serious talent.
We are excited to present to you his new single What’s Goin’ On featuring industry goliaths Monsta Ganjah, Layzie Bone and Mareko.
Jay-Gee got started early. Fresh out of High School, he acquired a Bachelors Degree in Audio Production by day, while MCing in some of Sydney’s most prestigious nightclubs by night.
Jay caught a huge break in 2009, as he was chosen to travel to Los Angeles to take part in a Think Tank for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s album ‘The Worlds Enemy’. In the following years to come Jay-Gee would tour with the likes of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Cassidy, Tha Outlawz, Lil Eazy E to name a few.
QLD based Hip Hop duo Kawz & Koz have just released their new single and music video Molly Meldrum.
The single is an absolutely party-banger and makes for an extremely strong debut from the boys.
The music video was produced by Luke Soanes, who has worked with the likes of Chillinit, Mitchos Da Menace, Madchild, The Amity Affliction and many more.
The single is the first offering from their forthcoming EP that is set for release later in 2021. The EP was produced by Cam Bluff (Hilltop Hoods, Illy, Bliss n Eso, Amy Shark) and One Above (Allday, Hilltop Hoods).

Brisbane based rapper Tu P has just released his powerful new single and video Coronavirus Brings Out The Worst (And Best) Of Us.
Tu P (AKA Tu Pham) works as a doctor in family and mental health and has composed a track commenting on the COVID-19 pandemic, touching on cover-ups, political inaction and the human spirit. He holds absolutely nothing back on this hard-hitting song.
A shortened version of the new single is available for download exclusively on Triple J Unearthed. This version of the track highlights the ‘best’ aspects of humanity throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.
Brisbane Rockers MARSHALL recently released their new EP called
A Thousand Years High.
The EP is an epic and progressive collection of heavy rock songs that was produced by Ben Kerswell and Allan Lahey.
MARSHALL released their single DumbStruck earlier in 2020 which was exclusively premiered via The Rock Pit.
