- Who are members of Parading and what are their roles?
There is Tom Coleman who plays drums and helps arrange songs, Mark Nelson who plays bass and also arranges, and Tom Barry (me) who plays guitar and sings.
- How long have you been playing together? Can you tell us how you originally formed? Where did your name come from?
Me and Tom Coleman have been playing together in different forms since highschool, looking at nearly 8 years now. Jamming mainly just as a two piece and trying to find a bass player or second guitarist to fit in. A couple of years ago I booked a show with Zond and we didn’t have a bass player and I asked Mark who I knew from playing with the Stabs and around if he could do the show with us. It worked really well and obviously it ended up being more than one show. The name Parading comes from the Beatles film Hard Days Night, were ringo goes ‘Parading’ out of frustration with the rest of the band, after being talked into it by Paul’s Grandfather.
- How would you describe your sound?
I would like to describe our sound as noisy and melodic, pretty and nasty at the same time hopefully.
- Who are your influences?
Sonic Youth
- Have you had many gigs recently?
We had our EP launch a month or so ago and am now booking interstate shows in May, we can sort of just take our time with shows at this stage there is no real point in overplaying in Melbourne that’s for sure.
- If you could share a stage with any band in the world who would you choose? Rowland Howard in Heaven
- What are Parading’s career highlight so far?
Watching R Kellys ‘Trapped in a Closet’ in Marks bedroom after a good rehearsal one night and whenever we jam out a new song we all love.
- If a crowd comes to see Parading perform live what will they go away remembering?
Their entire life to date
- You’ve just released your debut album. What can people expect to hear on it? Hopefully a good mix of what I mentioned earlier, lot’s of the heaven and hell aspects of music.
- What was the process like putting together the album?
We originally went into birdland to record one side of a split 7” with Alex Jarvis who plays guitar on the ep aswel. We ended up just digging the sound and atmosphere in there and decided to put down what we had at the time, we recorded over a few sessions adding up to probably 4 full days including mixing.
- Where do you hope Parading end up in 2011? What are you short term goals? What are your long term goals?
We are trying to write for an album now which hopefully we can get stuck into recording a bit later in the year I’m looking forward to trying a different approach to recording as well.Short term goals are just to launch our EP interstate and play well we can certainly be one way or the other.
