Hailing from the Midlands, Speaking In Shadows chose music and thus a haggard old van over rather than a shiny new Lamborghini. To them, life isn’t about dollar signs or bank statements, because they feel no amount of money “could ever recreate the experience of performing live music.” If meeting like-minded people, travelling to far-flung cities with your friends, and doing what you love isn’t the right way to spend your life, then these UK guys perfectly happy being wrong.
Alongside touring the UK and mainland Europe, they’ve just written and recorded a brand new EP that’s taken them back to our roots – no agendas, no concepts, no gimmicks. “We’re writing music that excites and inspires us, and hope that our songs will not only engage and entertain our listeners, but empower and encourage them to find inspiration of their own.”
No plans yet to tour Australia, but we talked with them about their lives
Q) Nuneaton is unknown here what is life like in Nuneaton for teens?
A) Nuneaton is funny little town: everyone gets to know everyone else over time, and though its people are diverse and differ greatly, something about the place seems to draw people back to it even when they’ve been away. Growing up here as a teen was actually pretty awesome! There was always lots going on in terms of live and local music, and everyone had a story or some kind of drama – but that’s what being a teenager is about I suppose!
It’s not quite like it used to be here; the music scene is quieter and there are less venues for young bands to play on. But the vibe is fairly similar – sure, it’s nothing really special but it’s home and it has a lot of memories for us all.
Q) “Speaking In Shadows” refers to people who will not speak out honestly
or openly. Do you guys speak out with each other, is it hard, have
you had to work on listening to each other as much as speaking?
A) We try to! As much as any person can, even to their closest friends. But we’ve tried to build the band on sincerity and honesty, and to be true to who we are as musicians and people. We’ve all learnt a lot about listening to one another as time has progressed, and I think we’re better people as a result. The band is better, too. We’re more of a unit, more of a ‘band’.
Q) What are your top 5 classic films you hope to have on Youtube?
A) America Beauty, The Man From Earth, Pulp Fiction, The Silence of the Lambs, and Shawshank Redemption.
Q) “Genuine” and “Sincere” are two words you use quite a bit, how do you
think your lyrics rate in trying to achieve this? Which songs would
you recommend we listen to?
A) The messages and stories behind all of the lyrics are ones that really encapsulate the ideas of ‘sincerity’ and being ‘genuine’ – we want our words to ring true with our fans, and for them to be able to relate on their own level because there’s truth behind every letter. Adam writes the lyrics and believes in writing from the heart about situations or moments, and we hope that shines through when we play them live.
We recommend listening to Figure of Eighty, Breaking Silence and Scatter!
