Melbourne’s cinematic soul journeymen, Surprise Chef, have announced their second album, a synth-laden instrumental funk odyssey Daylight Savings.
Released Thursday Aug 20, the first track off the album New Ferrari highlights the band’s core rhythm section, an instrumental quest which earned the four-piece combo world-wide recognition with their visionary debut album All News Is Good News (2019).
Daylight Savings is filled with all the optimism and hope that comes with the impending warmer months and longer days in Australia.
Expanding upon where the debut album left off, Daylight Savings edges towards 1970s-style jazzfunk complete with the epic drama, ebbs and flows of a vintage David Axelrod and the influence of Melbourne instrumental outfits, Karate Boogaloo and The Putbacks.
Surprise Chef is Lachlan Stuckey (guitar), Jethro Curtin (keyboard and vibraphone), Andrew Congues (drums) and Carl Lindeberg (bass). Daylight Savings is engineered by Henry Jenkins, mastered by Max Dowling and features guest musicians Joe Orton (slide guitar, percussion), Hudson Whitlock (percussion) and Lucky Pereira (percussion).
New Ferrari is out Friday 21 August on all streaming services. Daylight Savings is out on CD, digital and vinyl LP on 16 October 2020 through College Of Knowledge Records and Mr Bongo UK.
